Yes you can but options are not marginable,
You can not short options
Monies for all purchases must be in the account prior to the sale if not the account is restricted for 90 days or until payment is made in full and you can not use the proceeds of the sale to cover the purchase amount due.
The rules that apply to being a pattern trader also apply to option securities.
CC- selling options to open is not considered a short position like if it were an equity. To sell to open is considered a new position and not a short – I’ve been trading options )both equities and commodities for over 40 years.
James – You need a margin account to carry certain option positions, but they are not considered marginable (per the Federal Reserve) since they have no loan value
