If you have to ask, you probably shouldn’t be trading options. Most brokers have different levels of trading options. Level 1 is for covered calls, where you own the underlying stock and sell a call on that stock. The next level is for buying puts and calls, the next is for naked calls, and then you can get into the really hairy stuff that is the next level.
Of course the broker is not going to allow you to trade until you have signed a form that you have read and understand the CBOE options guide AND have the funds available to back up your trades.

$2000 is the minimum but not the optimum.
Depending on your strategy you need different amount of capital too. Some strategies like covered call or multiple spreads can be costly, while straight call put buying will be cheap.
